"Making our own" has become a thing of the past with our busy lives. I barely have time to go to the supermarket let alone make stuff, but I find the supermarket shelves stocked with products which are gently creeping skywards, price-wise, and we have no idea of the ingredients. At least these are natural. Here are a couple of recipes for hand creams that my grandma would use. I don't fancy the potato one; seems a bit messy to me but the almond one is pretty useful.

Hand Cream
Potato Hand Cream
2 Potatoes (medium)
1 tablespoon of almond oil
1 tablespoon of glycerin
1 teaspoon of orange flower water

Cook and mash the potatoes, add the oils and lastly the orange flower water. If the mixture is too thick add some extra orange flower water. It will make more of a paste rather than a cream. Leave on your hands for an hour, then rinse off. Keep in the fridge.

Almond Day Cream
85g ground Almonds
1/4 pint milk (or any substiture such as soya milk, almond milk etc)
1 egg yolk
2 teaspoons of almond oil.

Simmer the almonds in the milk until it has all been absorbed. Beat the egg yolk and stir it in. Bring the mixture to the boil for a couple of minutes. Allow to cool, then fold in the almond oil. Keep refridgerated.

Other Tips:
Lemon: A slice of lemon or it's juice will remove any stubborn dirt.
Cucumber: Mix the juice with an equal quantity of witch hazel for chapped hands.
Sugar: Mixed with an equal quantity with sunflower oil will clean stained hands
Bran: A substitute for soap. Wet hands, dip in, rub and rinse.
Milk: Soaked in warm milk for 5 minute will help chapped rough hands.

What are your tips? Do you prefer to buy or are there a few creative ones amongst us?

The UK is in recession again they say, so a few money saving tips are probably in order. I'm not convinced that everything we use on our skins is good for us and as a teenager I didn't have that much money so would make my potions and lotions myself.

Sorting through my old notebooks and papers from days gone by, I found some old skincare recipes that I had collected from old magazines and given to me by my grandma. The plan was to collate them into some kind of book. Well, they've been sitting there for donkeys and I still haven't shared them so I think it's time that they saw the light of day. They may not be miracle wrinkle cures, but they are natural.

Homemade Cleansers
Herbal Cleansing Milk
2 tablespoons of elder flowers
1/4 pint buttermilk

Slowly boil the flowers in milk for half an hour.
Cover and leave to soak for about 2 hours.
Strain and leave in the refrigerator.

Yogurt and Lemon Cleansing Milk
1 tablespoon of natural yogurt
1 teaspoon of lemon juice

Mix together and use. Make fresh for each use.

Oatmeal Cleanser (scrubbing cleanser)
1 tablespoon of oatmeal
2-3 tablespoons of milk or cream

Grind your oatmeal to a powder (don't use instant!)
Add the milk or cream to make a stiff paste - you may need more than stated.
Rub on...then rinse off.

If you try them...let me know how you get on!

Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's have slashed 4p off a litre of fuel bringing the price at the pumps down to 1.369p (how do they get the .009?). Hopefully, other garages will follow suit. It won't be for long though, as George Osborne has said he wants to increase petrol 4p from August! Jaysus...how much more expensive is it going to become? Ms Grant previously worked in Number 10 as a senior press officer, the Department for Work and Pensions, and then at the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Mr Blair feels he has things to say and now is the right time. Sources say that " it will be above party politics", and has intimated that it will be through an elected House of Lords, as a Senator.
On the go at the mo (sorry, that was bad!) I have:

The Baby Laundry for Unmarried Mothers by Angela Patrick - half read! A bit of a "woe is me" true story about unwanted pregnancies in the 1960's. Not really enjoying it, but will probably read it eventually, put it down then forget it!

The Dukan Diet - Love it! Pick it up, have a quick look at the menus; read a bit more.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel by Deborah Moggach - Started to read, then realised I read it 7 years ago! They changed the name..bliddy cheek! I'm reading it again, as I enjoyed it then...but I love anything by Ms Moggach

The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes - I also love anything by Julian Barnes. I'm devouring it at a great rate of knots...I actually dished up dinner reading it tonight!!

So......... what are you reading at the moment and what would you recommend?

It's been a long time since I read a book that I felt was totally different, moving and thrilling at the same time! I could not put this one down. I'm not generally into ghost stories, but this one was absolutely beautiful. Twists and turns throughout, emotional and touching, a brilliant read and well written.

Without giving too much away, Grace and her daughter are involved in a fire at a school. They are admitted to hospital, have "out of body experiences" and meet and watch the events unfold around them. Someone wants one of them dead...someone is to blame.

That's all I can say without giving anything away....loved it!
