• Deadly storm Sendong hits Northern Mindanao

Deaths reach 957 and hundreds still missing.

Tropical storm 'Sendong', known internationally as 'Washi', has been labelled the deadliest storm this year.

The storm struck Northern Mindanao, the Visayas and Palawan over the weekend and has now claimed at least 957 lives according to the latest report from Director Benito Ramos of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) (as of Tuesday 20 December 2011). It was also said that the council have lost count of the number of missing people following the flashfloods brought on by the storm.

Sendong hit a part of Mindanao that only sees significant tropical storms and typhoons once every 12 years according to Dr Jeff Masters, an American meteorologist.

A US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) report of December 15, a day before the storm struck, said Sendong was carrying as much as 50 millimeters of rainwater, almost the same amount that storm Ondoy brought in 2009.

The illegal logging of the natural forest of Mindanao, converting the area into a pineapple plantation, could have contributed to the flashfloods as the water would have been able to run off quickly on the relatively barren soil, as trees and plants can act as a natural barrier to slow water run off.

    Batty Boi?

I was scouring the net today and found this article in November of last year. I will leave for you to decide whether calling someone a Batty Boi is appropriate or not.

A leading City lawyer introduced Ali G as evidence before a tribunal to support his assertion that he had not made homophobic remarks to a member of staff.

Antony Brown is Managing Partner of Bivonas LLP, and rated by the Legal 500. He found himself up before an Employment Tribunal after a barrister his firm had employed, Lee Bennett, claimed that he had been subjected to sexual orientation discrimination. One of the allegations was that one of Brown's partners had written a note, as reported in the Lawyer describing Bennett's " batty boi" mate.

What is less well known is that
